My Diwali letters

Its been a very hectic Diwali Day for me today and I might have missed wishing a whole lot of people on this very auspicious day.

To one and all, Wish you a Happy Diwali and hope all you dreams come true !

Here are a couple of letters that my mailman couldn’t deliver to the intended addresses; so I post them here !

Dear Sachin,

*takes digs at the fickle Indian supporters**sarcastic*It is really nice of you to get dismissed in the 90’s. I remember the days where you scored 100’s every single time you crossed 90. Back then, we lambasted you for being selfish and taking a lot of time for reaching from 90 to 100. We called you names. Called you a ’spineless person who put his own interests before the team’s’. Everyone was convinced that you played for records and that you wanted to get to 100 international hundreds before anyone else. Everyone knew how you ran your runs harder and ambled along when you were the non-striker. You have devised a novel technique to counter us. These days you never cross the three figure mark. Looks like your priorities have changed. So, we need a better argument now. And to no amusement, we have suddenly found one. You are a victim of the ‘nervous nineties’. What sort of player are you ? You get pressurized each time you go to 90 and then give your wicket away. Don’t you understand that we have suddenly realized that we need you to cross 100 so that eventually our team total goes up ? I mean how could you ignore the responsibilities that come with being a top player. It is really disappointing.*urges crowd to stop blabbering useless things**end of sarcasm*

Before I sleep tonight, I will pray that you get to 100 without ever encountering a 99. 96+ 4 will do fine. As far as I am concerned, I don’t really care how much you score. A 99 is as valuable as a 91 is as valuable as a 101. And I know that if you score a 90, you would invariably have scored it of 90 ish balls. And that augurs for a 300+ score. A 91 ball 99 is far more important than a 110 ball-100. Some left handers in this country fail to understand this. But then you can’t find faults with a ‘Prince’, can you ? I will be delighted if you score a 91 ball 99 in each game. And I really hope you do.

And that one sight — clearing the left foot and lofting the ball over extra cover or dancing down to hoist the off spinner over mid wicket makes my day. One such elevated shot each innings and there will be contentment in many Indian homes.

Dear Stevie G,

I simple adore you. I want to be like you. You score in the 93rd minute of FA cup finals from 40 yards, you lead a fightback in the Champions League final when all hope is lost, you give us those Olympiakos moments. Let me take this opportunity to tell you that you are one of my two favourite sportspersons. Not many people appreciate your contribution. But you never seem to care. Quiet flow the tackles. We love it when you score from outside the box. We also love Martin Tyler screaming out “Gerrrrrrrrrrrrrarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd……………..Take a bow, son! ” We love the way you carry Liverpool. We want to work and play under a leader like you. We get highly disappointed when Terry is made England captain. We are in awe of you. We respect you. We love you. We like Alex Curran as well.

*Olympiakos moment*

Liverpool need to win 3-1 at home to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League. They are leading 2-1 with 6 minutes to go. Its all hands to the pump for the Greek side. They are defending in numbers with all 10 outfield players scrambling for their lives. Liverpool are poised to go out. Then Stevie G does this:

Olympiakos Moment

Needless to say, Liverpool end up winning the competition. And we get a new phrase – ‘Olympiakos Moment ‘!

(Btw, did you notice the Gerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrard thingy ? )

Heartfelt thanks to him for reminding me of the Olympiakos moment. Infact it was he who introduced me to this phrase, although I pretty much doubt if he made it himself ! I guess it was soccerpulse

As he wanted me to say, currently he is occupied with rotational motion and other related stuff and wants an Olympiakos moment to happen quickly.

pps: Unlike the masses, me does support india through thick and thin in whichever sporting discipline they participate.
